About Ian Cottingham Electrical

My experience should ensure that your electrical problems are solved quickly and thoroughly.

Maybe its a small job like replacing a light bulb, adding a socket or a major project like replacing a fuse board with a new consumer unit. Whatever the task, I will always provide the same professional and punctual service.

Are you buying a property? Then my advice to you is to have an Electrical Installation Condition Report carried out. This will involve a visual inspection of the electrical installation and testing of the wiring with specialist equipment. A full report is then given and any faults found will be discussed and likely costs of repairs can be quoted.

This website provides more information about all of my services, including some recommendations regarding electrical installations and personal safety.

Most of the electrical problems that I attend are due to poor quality of DIY. Your electrical installation may be working but is it safe. I have found houses that have had additional work done but the main earth has been disconnected. It will still work but in the event of a fault, you have lost the earthing system that is there to protect you.

Most DIY'ers do not have the specialist test equipment required to carry out the necessary testing after any electrical work. They also do not issue any certificates which most insurance companies will request in the event of an electrical fire. Your insurance may be invalid if you have had substandard work carried out.

Brief Career History

I started my electrical career as an electrician in the Royal Air Force. After 9 years I continued by specialising on electrical fork lift trucks. After another 9 years I then moved onto Bernard Matthews as a maintenance engineer working on state of the art food manufacturing and packaging equipment. I also worked on 3 phase factory distribution systems and the PAT testing of electrical equipment. I became self employed as a domestic / industrial electrician in 2009. I have continued with my maintenance engineering role by contracting to companies that require short term cover.
